Karumba

Nestled on the mouth of the Norman River Karumba is, quite literally, where the "Outback meets the Sea" and home to some of the most spectacular sunsets over the Gulf of Carpentaria.  Situated 72km north west from Normanton via bitumen road, Karumba is a laid back easy going community.

Karumba is a fishing village with a small but very cosmopolitan population.  It has around 700 permanent residence - and several thousand visitors throughout the year.  With fantastic tourist facilities and accommodation Karumba is a great holiday destination for the entire family.

Why not take a river cruise and enjoy the view, take up a spot of fishing on the bank of the river or, for those more adventurous fisherman, take a fishing charter for a guaranteed good time.  There is even a Sports Centre open to the public 7 days a week and a golf course!  Visitors seem to have no trouble adapting to the casual easygoing atmosphere, whether they are here for a couple of days or the entire winter.

Many of the residence in Karumba are part of the fishing community.  A prawning fleet operates out of the port of Karumba, barramundi fishing is a very big industry and mudcrabs are harvested here as well.  It is an absolute mecca for people who love seafood, you can even take a tour through the Barramundi Discovery Centre whilst on your stay in Karumba.  Karumba is also home to the Pasminco Century Mine Post Site and Karumba Livestock Loading, both operations providing numerous jobs for the community in thier exporting activities.
