Water Quality and Treatment Information
Queensland Health has provided the following information including a list of resources and some generic advice to be shared within flood-affected Shires:
For rainwater tanks (including bore-water holding tanks) affected by natural disasters, QH have published the following factsheet - Rainwater tanks affected by natural disasters(PDF, 113KB)
Shallow bores are likely to have been affected by the flooding and water from these bores should not be used to fill (or refill) rainwater tanks. Turkey's nest dams will almost certainly have been affected. Deep bores may also have been affected. A good rule of thumb is for residents to not use any source of water that is suspected of being contaminated, as a result of the flooding, to fill or refill a rainwater tank.
If no safe alternative is available, residents should be advised to boil their water for:
- drinking
- brushing teeth
- preparing and cooking foods
- washing raw foods such as fruit and vegetables
- preparing beverages and making ice
- preparing baby formula
- sponge-bathing infants.
Information on cleaning and disinfecting taps has been provided - Returning to a disaster-affected house or building(PDF, 316KB)
Guidance on managing water supplies on rural properties on a day-to-day basis can be found in our 'Safe water on rural properties' guideline(PDF, 184KB)
Local concerns may be directed to the Townsville Public Health Unit on phone (07) 4433 6900, or email: EH_Townsville@health.qld.gov.au
