Applying for Council Positions

A career with Carpentaria Shire Council is a rewarding one.

Congratulations on making the decision to apply for a position with Carpentaria Shire Council.

Application Process

Council prefers that job applications are done on-line but recognises that this may not be possible for all applicants. In the event that candidates are unable to apply on line they may post their application marked Private and Confidential to the Chief Executive Officer, Carpentaria Shire Council, PO Box 31, Normanton QLD 4890. Alternatively, you may hand deliver your application to the Council Office in Haig St Normanton. Please keep in mind that applications both posted or hand delivered must be received by the advertised closing date.

Once you have submitted your application to Council, you will be notified by e-mail that your application has been received so it is essential that a valid e-mail address is provided.

You are required to supply a Resume or CV for all Council applications. Please ensure that all your contact details are current. In the event that you change telephone numbers or addresses after you submit your application please contact Human Resources at Council so that your details can be changed on your application.

Applicants will be scored on their merit and the content of their application and its applicability to the advertised position.

Job specific questions will often be asked when submitting an on line application. Answers to these questions form the basis of our shortlisting process. When answering the Job Specific Questions, it is important that you provide real-life examples as evidence to demonstrate the skills, experience and knowledge that is relevant to the position you are applying for. Putting "See Resume or CV" when answering the Job Specific Questions may disadvantage you.

Interview

Council endeavours to hold interviews within two weeks of the closing date for applications.

The selection panel will do whatever they can to meet any special requirements you have to enable you to attend the interview, such as building access or communication assistance. Inform the person arranging the interview of any special requirements you may have.

If an interview is being conducted, the panel will follow a structured process, asking all applicants the same questions. However, they may follow up or explore particular issues with applicants that arise from their applications and/or questions asked of them. The questions are designed to gather information on how well you meet the selection criteria.

You may be asked two types of questions: behavioural and situational.

Behavioural questions ask for examples of how you have handled certain situations in the past.

Situational questions focus on how you would handle a particular situation or aspect of the position.

Consider the type of questions you may be asked. Your answers should accurately reflect your knowledge, skills and abilities.

After the interview, the selection panel will rate or assess your performance against each criteria and against the performance of other applicants.

Other selection techniques may be included in the process. For example, you may be asked to provide examples of previous work or to participate in a work test.

The panel may contact your named referees. Make sure you have nominated at least two referees who can support your claims regarding your skills, knowledge, experience, training and abilities in relation to the role for which you have applied. Get your referees’ permission before nominating them. Give them copies of your application and the job advertisement so that they are well prepared to speak on your behalf.

Notification of Appointment

The successful applicant is notified first after the selection decision is confirmed. All other applicants are then notified by telephone or email of the selection decision.

If you need more information or clarification about the selection process or the advertised role, please contact Human Resources at Council on (07) 47452200.
