Pictorial and Oral History of Flood events

Carpentaria Shire Council will soon be calling on members of the public who wish to share their experiences with the last Monsoon event through photos, videos and stories. Council will also be interested in previous events also including the 1974 floods and other events through the years.

We are seeking members of the public who have photos and videos that they wish to share and others who may want to tell their stories of their experience. An expression of interest form and forms in relation to how to best present images and footage will be released soon.

Members of the public will be asked to provide details like, name and address, where the image was captured (taken), and identifiable landmarks, some of your feelings and stories behind the photo or video and of course providing permission for Council to use your image.

All images and video will be returned to the members of the public who share their experiences and images etc. with Council. Images will form part of a display what will be showcased to highlight the impacts of flooding in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

This project has been jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Government through the FNQ & NQ Monsoon Trough Category C Flexible Funding Grants Program. Council has engaged Vetta Productions from Townsville to carry out this project with Council. Vetta Productions have worked with Council on a previous project.

Mayor Jack Bawden said that the funding provides an opportunity for Council to capture, record and catalogue a series of photos and videos taken by the community to showcase the impacts of flooding in our communities.

“Members of the public will also be interviewed by Vetta Productions and their stories will be kept for others to appreciate the impacts of flood event on people's lives in the Gulf of Carpentaria”, he said.
