Disaster Recovery Plan in Development

Back

How do you recover from a disaster?

We live in an area that is prone to the impacts of floods, droughts, heatwaves and cyclones, the Carpentaria Shire Council Local Disaster Management Group is seeking community input to develop a Community Recovery Plan.

Mayor Jack Bawden said it was important that the community provide input into the plan, and to think about their preparation for this wet season.

“We want to hear from people about how they are impacted, and what our community needs to recover from a disaster, so we can be ready for the next big event. We are used to these events happening and generally just get on with it, but this is an opportunity to put it down in a plan so we can identify any support that is needed - when it is needed” Mayor Bawden said.

“We are currently in La Nina – which generally means more rain and more cyclones, so we could be in for another big season. We want to be on the front foot”.

“We’ll be holding community meetings in Karumba and Normanton on 8, 9, 10 December, so come along and have your say” he said.

The meetings will be led by consultants from Strategic Disaster Solutions and Community Bred. Community meetings will be held in Normanton on Tuesday 8 December from 12noon – 2pm, and Karumba on Wednesday 9 December from 12 noon – 2pm. Individual meetings can also be organised on Tuesday afternoon and Thursday in Normanton, and Wednesday in Karumba.

To RSVP contact Cherie Schafer at Carpentaria Shire Council on 4745 2200, or email at cherie.schafer@carpentaria.qld.gov.au . A questionnaire will also be available online, and from Carpentaria Shire Council until Friday 18 December.

The draft plan will be released for comment in January 2021.
