Carpentaria Shire Council Water Treatment Plant in Normanton and the Sewerage Treatment Plant in Karumba have recently been upgraded with new facilities provided under the Works 4 Queensland funding provided by the State Government under the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning.

Carpentaria Shire Council has been allocated $1,670,000 under this program from the 2021-2024 financial years. Carpentaria Shire Council is using this funding for a majority or renewals and upgrades to its assets to increase useful lives and reduce depreciation rather than just building new infrastructure and adding to the depreciation expenses for the Council and its community.

Manager Water and Waste, Ben Hill said “the new buildings provide a much more professional operating and controls room as well as a meeting room, amenities and accommodation for contractors or on call staff.”

Mayor Jack Bawden praised the funding that Works 4 Queensland provides for Councils especially in the rural and remote parts of the State. “The Works 4 Queensland funding works for Carpentaria Shire,” he said

“Projects that Council is able to deliver under this program are those that would continue to remain not progressed if the funding were not available to Council. This funding program needs to continue in the longer term to allow Councils to prioritise the infrastructure backlog, create employment and assist in the long term financial sustainability of Councils in rural and remote Queensland.”
