Waste Management Facilities

Back

The waste facilities at Normanton and Karumba are provided free of charge to the public for domestic use and are open 24 hours a day. This enables our shire to remain clean and gives the opportunity for residents to dispose of the rubbish in an appropriate and environmentally friendly way. Council has engaged contractors (Wanless Waste Management) who have been working hard to keep the facilities clean and operating in an effective manner.

Unfortunately, there are still people who do the wrong thing, including committing acts of deliberate vandalism at the facilities outside of hours. It should be noted that cameras are recording footage at all times and anybody found committing any offences will be prosecuted. Offences that will be prosecuted include illegal dumping/littering, deliberately lighting fires and damage to any equipment. Further issues may result in Council having no option but to shut the facilities outside of normal hours to prevent further damage to its assets.

The facility has signs directing people to the appropriate locations to dispose of their waste as well as a facility manager who can assist. There are some changes occurring and the general waste bins will be made more accessible over time. In the meantime please dispose of general waste in the bins if possible, however if you are unable to, please place the waste neatly next to the bins for the operator to collect.

Please be aware that there is regularly heavy machinery in operation and follow any direction and signage when at the facilities to ensure your safety. If you require any further information or assistance, you can contact Wanless on 1300 926 537.
