Festival fever has taken over the Carpentaria Shire office with the planning of the annual Outback By The Sea Festival well underway.

The festival is a week-long event celebrating the legendary barramundi, seafood, live music, Indigenous culture, and arts and crafts and an opportunity for residents and visitors to experience the Gulf community in all its diversity.

In 2024, the Festival will run from September 13 – 21 and will kick off with Australia’s newest film festival – the Ocean & Outback Film Festival.

Mayor Jack Bawden confirmed that Film Festivals Australia and the Council have entered an exciting agreement to showcase the region’s talent at an outdoor short film festival on Saturday 14, September.

“The Ocean & Outback Film Festival will be the opening event to the Outback By The Sea Festival and local film making enthusiasts will have access to a range of workshops and assistance in the lead up to produce their own short film, which will then be shown on the big screen,” Mayor Bawden said.

Film Festivals Australia Directors Steve Bastoni and Meg Pascoe said they are delighted to bring the Ocean and Outback Film Festival to the Gulf of Carpentaria region.

Steve and Meg bring 15 years’ experience in delivering film festivals to delight regional audiences across Australia. The team also delivers free filmmaking workshops to students of all ages empowering them to tell their stories on film.

“We look forward to meeting the locals and planting the seeds for them to learn about filmmaking and empowering them to share their unique stories through the exciting medium of short film,” they said.

The long-term goal is to create a community of local filmmakers who work together with industry professionals to tell stories of the region on film, taking advantage of the breathtaking local landscape and preserving local culture.”

The week will continue to include a range of workshops and activities for people of all ages and interests that bring participants closer to nature, food and adventure in this destination of contrasts.

The closing evening concert on the outdoor lagoon stage at the Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre is always a great night and 2024 will be no different.

Members of Council’s Community Development team will shortly be calling for expressions of interest from interested parties to sponsor, provide entertainment, workshops, food and beverage and other interesting experiences for the week.
